SC3 Resolutions

GENETICALLY- MODIFIED WHEAT MORATORIUM

WHEREAS, North Dakota grows approximately 50% of the nation’s hard red spring wheat; and WHEREAS, the majority of our export markets will refuse to accept genetically-modified wheat due to consumer concerns about the safety of genetically-modified food products; and

WHEREAS, there is no protection for the farmer from losses due to contamination of fields or to stored crops; and

WHEREAS, there is no way to segregate genetically-modified wheat from conventional varieties; and

WHEREAS, genetic manipulation empowers corporations to further undermine traditional sustainable family farm agricultural practices, increase agribusiness concentration, and threatens to exercise total control over our food and fiber supply; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that South Central Citizens Coalition supports a moratorium on the commercial release of genetically modified wheat; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that South Central Citizens Coalition urges regional grain elevators to refuse to accept genetically modified wheat until they can guarantee segregation.
